                                   2016 Academy Program Preview

Program Director, Luke Brown December, 2015

Winter may just be getting started in the San Juans but here at the Academy office it is hard not be excited about summer! As Program Director for Telluride Academy I always look forward to the sleepy season that rests somewhere in-between the final fall festival and the winding of the winter chairlifts. It is a season of scheming, dreaming and designing unique adventures for all ages. The past months have been a marathon of program development for 2016 and the result is over 100 unique, fun and educational experiences for both the Academy faithful and the new-adventurer alike. As always the Academy program strives to offer opportunities for all ages and all interests to get involved, to challenge themselves and to discover new horizons. The following is a preview of what to look for in 2016.
STEAM Adventures: (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math)
We are extremely excited to launch our new STEAM based-adventures this coming summer! Blending the best of adventure education with hands-on applications, Telluride Academy will offer a variety of STEAM-focused programs throughout the summer. Students can take to the skies in DRONES, explore renewable energies in Solar Rangers, engineer and build robots in Lego Lunatics or perform under the big top in Circus Holus Bolus. Based on natural and adaptable ways of learning, STEAM programs are designed to create a solid and applicable knowledge base that stays with the student long after the program ends. Through the creativity and enthusiasm of scientists, acclaimed artistic directors and industry professionals, students will immerse themselves in a world that celebrates discovery and allows for an interactive and adventurous learning experience.
Rivers and Canyons and Mountains Oh My!
Taking full advantage of our geographic placement in the Southwest, Telluride Academy programs will explore the diverse landscapes that make up our “Big-Time Backyard” in a variety of fun and unique ways. For the high-alpine enthusiast we have numerous trekking programs on the books this summer. Aspiring alpinists will find plenty of adventure participating in Mini Mountaineers or My First Summit. Seasoned veterans looking for a “boots and backpack” experience will have their work cut out for them choosing between classics such as Summit Club and Lllama Trekking and new additions including Lunar Llamas, Cabin Fever and Summits and Slacklines. Rivers will take center stage in 2016 with options for both the white-water adrenaline junkies and the peaceful paddlers. Programs such as Paddle Mania, Raft ‘n’ Rail and Wet ‘n’ Wild will have you engaged in the art of running rivers and charging big rapids while Padd-o-Rado, Full Moon River and SUP Surfers will celebrate the “Zen” of the Stand Up Paddle Board. Mountain bike fans have a summer of fat-tire fun waiting for them in our biggest biking summer yet! Beginners can learn the basics during our popular Intro to MTB courses and Tread Head programs and those ready for the best riding Colorado has to offer will be impressed with the itineraries of Colo-RAD-ical and Durango to Moab. Can’t decide between biking and boating? Do both in our new Pedal ‘n’ Paddle programs or our classic Bike, Boat, Belay!
The Art of Travel
For those looking to expand their horizons, explore new landscapes and meet new people the Academy has a handful of travel-based adventures to choose from. For the animal lover we have a new Wolves 'n' Wings road trip that will take you across the state to meet face to face some of our planets’ most majestic and mysterious creatures with stops at Raptor Centers, Wolf Sanctuaries and more! Surf and Skate adventures are back with road trips to California in SoCal Surf and a sidewalk and Stand Up Paddle board expedition in Colorado Surf and Skate. Our flagship Outdoor Leadership Challenge program is “going Grand” in 2016! With a renewed focus on “Leadership in Action” this two-week exploration of the Grand Canyon will include treks into Havasupai Canyon and a multi-day white water service-learning trip through the lower gorge of the Canyon. Finally, we are excited to announce our first ever student expedition to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands! Continuing our commitment to creating opportunities for cultural immersion and global exploration, our oldest participants are encouraged to join our internationally-savy staff for a hands-on and fully immersed adventure to one of the most magical places on our planet!
