This Academy classic returns in 2017 with a renewed focus on progressing fundamental outdoor skills in conjunction with personal character development and problem solving. Utilizing the leadership skills and unique role-modeling of Academy instructors, students will spend two weeks exploring the San Juan area in a variety of unique, engaging and educational ways. The program will begin with an emphasis on individualized leadership styles, group dynamics and problem solving as Backcountry Boyz take to the river. With personalized instruction from the Academy’s Boating Directors, students will learn basic paddling skills and develop an eye for reading moving water; skills that will be called upon during a handful of whitewater excursions down multiple regional rivers. Week two takes to the alpine with a unique “Train Trekking” adventure into the Weminuche Wilderness. After boarding the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and travelling high into the San Juans, students will disembark the train for a double overnight backpacking journey into the heart of Colorado’s largest wilderness area. With assistance and guidance from Academy instructors, students will be charged with planning their backcountry menu, assisting with route planning, attempting peak summits, camp set-up and meal preparation. Evenings will be spent under starry night skies engaged in meaningful conversations and debriefs. We will highlight lessons learned through nature and how challenges can teach us a lot about not only our surrounding but ourselves as well.
