Lizard Head Llamas

Ages: 9 - 11

Dates: July 29 - August 1

Tuition: $990
Overnights: 2

Challenge Level:

The Academy is excited to once again offer Llama Trekking to our younger adventurers!  This introductory Llama course will get young backpackers paired up with the gentle giants from San Juan Mountain Llama Treks where they will learn to care for their furry friends who will in turn help carry the heavier camping gear and teach them how to safely travel in the backcountry. Llama Trekkers will learn wilderness skills as they hike among the scenic valleys, open meadows and mountain-top vistas of the Lizard Head Wilderness and spend two nights at a cozy base camp perched perfectly for fun day hikes and pack-free exploring. Backpacks, pads, sleeping bags (and llamas) will be provided for this adventure and will be used to teach proper packing techniques and fitting. Get your “Llama On” with the Lizard Head Llamas!
General Program Schedule:

Monday: Llama packing 101 (packs provided!), menu and more!

Tuesday: Load up van, check gear (bring your duffel bags!) and head out to meet the Llamas! Llama loading, names and intros. Hit the trail to set- up base camp!

Wednesday: Backcountry Llama Day! Llama Olympics and backcountry cuisine.

Thursday: Morning exploration of the high country, pack up camp and return to trailhead. Say goodbye to the llamas!

All participants will receive Telluride Academy backpacks, sleeping bags and sleeping pads while participating in this program! Gear will be used by instructors to teach proper packing techniques on the first day and will go home with students the night before their overnight backpacking trips. We ask that you bring an empty duffel bag on the morning of your overnights so your child's gear can be taken home easily at the end of the week.
