Join longtime Academy instructors Bria Light and David Nesis for an immersive international adventure to the colorful and diverse land of Morocco! This ancient kingdom of fabled camel caravans, bustling markets and labyrinthine medinas, Berber villages, soaring mountain ranges, and sleepy coastal towns will be our home on the road for two weeks of cultural immersion and outdoor adventure. Together we will learn all about the culture, customs, traditions, and diverse landscapes with all five senses all while experiencing Morocco’s legendary hospitality.
We will begin our journey in the Blue Pearl of Chefchauen, so-called for the town’s picturesque blue-painted medina, founded in 1471. Here we will wander through the small town’s maze-like medina, explore the nearby waterfalls, and get our first taste the famous sweet mint tea! Next we’ll head to the Middle Atlas mountains, where we’ll begin several days of cultural immersion, staying with local families in the town of Imouzzer Kandar whose cedar-forested hills and olive groves lend this region a distinct beauty. Alongside our local hosts, we’ll visit the area’s orchards, lakes, and learn about the local indigenous population, the Amazigh Berbers, all while finding the flow of Moroccan daily life.
After bidding farewell to our newfound friends in Imouzzer, we will head off to our next adventure: a trek in the High Atlas mountains with our incredible guide Latifa, longtime mountain guide and one of only seven female mountain guides in Morocco. We’ll spend three days trekking through the dramatic peaks and wildflower-laden valleys on fragrant trails where wild lavender, mint, and eucalyptus abound, staying in remote Berber villages each night.
Finally, we will head to the sleepy surf town of Taghazout on the Atlantic coast, where turquoise waves lap at beaches where camels wander with their turbaned owners. We’ll get a chance to catch some waves, with the coaching of local surf instructors, participate in a beach cleanup, and even visit a local swimming hole complete with aquamarine pools surrounded by red rock!
We’ll spend our last day in this idyllic beach town reflecting on all we have learned, soaking in our unique surroundings, and deepening the friendships we’ve formed before heading back to the the U.S. full of unforgettable stories, memories, and new insights.
