Academy’s flagship program returns in 2016 with an exciting new collection of locations and activities! Designed to teach “Leadership in Action” OLC heads south to the Grand Canyon for two weeks of personal discovery in the desert. Under the professional and passionate leadership of Academy field staff, students will be encouraged to challenge themselves through excursions, activities and adventure. Our expedition will start out with two nights at a high alpine retreat for introductions, goal setting and a nationally recognized Wilderness First Aid and CPR course. We will then head south and prepare for our backpacking excursion into the heart of Havasupai. Located on the Haulapai Reservation, this desert paradise is home to stunning turquoise water, cascading waterfalls and endless opportunities for refreshing swims and shady siestas. During our stay as guests on the reservation, students will participate in a service learning project while learning about the Havasupai and Hualapai tribes that have inhabited this sacred canyon for thousands of years. Our grand finale will be a 4-day river trip journey down the Colorado River through the lower gorge of the Grand Canyon! We will be partnering with Grand Canyon Youth for a “service and science” adventure that will include hands on species collection for the USGS, place-based hikes and interactive art projects. Students will team up with professional guides to paddle this stunning 54-mile stretch of canyon that includes raging rapids, secret waterfalls, sandy beaches and star filled night skies. OLC will ignite your flames of discovery while challenging you to look at the world and yourself from the unique vantage point that only the Grand Canyon can provide!
