Today’s young generations are experiencing the world in ways we never have before; a world that demands defense and protection of our environment. In our new “Planet Protectors” program, Telluride Academy is partnering with Sheep Mountain Alliance to provide an interactive, educational experience. Students will learn about Telluride’s environmental history from its beginnings in hard rock mining to today’s forest’s and watershed’s health restoration projects. They’ll learn how this small valley’s past has shaped today’s environment and hear about current scientific efforts to better understand our forest and watershed health through monitoring and data collection. We’ll visit old mines, witness the impact beetles have on our forests, and visit local recycling and compositing sites. On the final day, parents are invited on a guided hike with the students and specialists from Sheep Mountain Alliance and Telluride Academy for an interactive outdoor, educational experience. Let’s educate ourselves about our environment so we can be the world’s mightiest “Planet Protectors!” And remember… “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead
