reflections on summer '36

september, 2016

The 36th summer of Telluride Academy programming has come to a safe and successful conclusion. This season was one of momentum and milestones for both our organization as a whole as well as for our students individually. We broke records on our programming fronts, enhanced our scholarship offerings for local families and introduced our growing student body to an extensive array of new activities, unique adventures and inspiring locations. With over 115 programs beginning and ending in our short summer season it is difficult (and nearly impossible) to sufficiently share each story of success and highlight every individual moment of student growth and achievement.  As program director I have compiled a few magical moments that to me, speak to the success of the Academy and our pursuit of our mission:

2 Treks into Havasupai, Grand Canyon                       Blue Ribbon winners at the Palisade Peach Festival
21 Unique ‘trip camps’ running in 2016                     Summiting Lone Cone Peak for only the 2nd time
Natural Horsemanship at Old Sawmill                       Hut Trippers biking over 215 miles from Durango to Moab
Rafting the lower gorge of the Grand Canyon            An All-Girl backcountry boating and trekking program
A Full Moon River trip first for the Academy             1st Annual Campfire Comedy stand-up show in Elks Park
Academy’s First trip to the Galapagos Islands          30th Anniversary of Mudd Butt Mystery Theater
Canyoneering Adventures for 8 to 10 yr olds                      4 Llama Treks into the San Juan high country
Indonesian theater adventures in Bali                       Lego Robots and DRONE building

With the accomplishment of every program, every interaction and every memory, there was an Academy instructor or specialist on-site sharing their passion with our students. This year, as with every year, the Academy once again benefited from its greatest asset and resource…it’s staff! We had a whopping 94 fantastic, creative, energetic and enthusiastic human beings contributing to our 2016 summer programming. This included our massive veteran field staff, a dozen new hires, FANTASTIC interns, splendid specialists from farm owners to yoga masters and many local experts in the fields of science and the performing arts. As always these individuals represent the best of the Academy. Their passion, professionalism and unique backgrounds are the ingredients in the three-decade long recipe that makes the Academy the incredible organization that it continues to be.

A HUGE THANKS to everyone who supported the Academy this summer! Whether you are a parent, a lucky participant, a summer staff member or simply a fan from afar we are so grateful to continue creating the unique community that is Telluride Academy. Through adventure and education, we hope to continue inspiring young people and to establish their life-long foundation for exploration and growth.

We look forward to summer 37 and hope you can be a part of it!

Yours in Adventure,

Luke
